New Student Programs | First-Year Student Emails

FY PARENTS + FAMILIES

JULY 14, 2021

Hello Emory Parents and Families!

This month, we are focused on the advising process and preparing for course registration in August. We recognize this process is likely quite different than what you and your student have experienced in the past, so we want to make sure that you understand the timeline as well as the variety of resources in place to help!

Our goal is for the process to be as smooth as possible for everyone; however, it’s important to set realistic expectations too. Here are three helpful tips that you can share with your student:

  • There are MANY incredible courses to choose from! Your student should spend time exploring the Course Atlas before registration. They can find options that align with their plan of study or ones that they are just excited to take. College courses are different than high school ones, so we encourage your student to take advantage of what’s being offered!

  • Your student should identify many possible course options. Some classes are more popular than others, so it’s important to be ready with an alternative if a course your student is interested in fills up.
  • It’s okay to spread out general education requirements or prerequisite courses. Although there are some classes that your student needs to take early on during their time at Emory, they can do so in either the fall or spring semester of their first year!

Registration Dates

In order to be successful, the first step is knowing when each part of the registration process takes place:

Pre-Registration Advising | Monday, July 12 - Wednesday August 4
Your student will sign up for, and attend, a virtual small group advising session with a staff member from the Office for Undergraduate Education. Registration details were mailed to your student's Emory email.

Course Registration | Monday, August 9 at 12 p.m. (EDT) - Wednesday August 11 at 11.59 p.m. (EDT)
Students should plan to register for a total of 15-17 credit hours for the fall semester.

Add/Drop/Swap | Monday, August 23 at 12 p.m. - Wednesday, September 1 at 11.59 p.m.
Add/Drop/Swap is a period of open enrollment. Students can make changes to their schedules without penalty during this period.
